- Citizenship through Birth – If you were born inside the United States or one of its territories, this is considered “birthright citizenship”.
- Citizenship through Acquisition – If you were born in another country, and at least one of your parents was a U. S. citizen, you may qualify as a U. S. citizen under “acquisition of citizenship.”
- Citizenship through Derivation – If you were a lawful permanent resident child when your parent naturalized and became a U.S. citizen, you may be eligible for citizenship through “derivation of citizenship.”
- Citizenship through Naturalization – After an immigrant has earned lawful permanent resident, and stayed in compliance for the requisite number of years, he or she can apply for U.S. citizenship through naturalization.
Form N-400 is used for Naturalization cases.
Form N-600 is used for both Acquisition and Derivation cases.
Each of these paths has its own set of requirements. Each poses unique challenges for immigrants seeking to become full fledged citizens.
This is why the forms you submit to the government must be prepared competently with accuracy and relevant supporting evidence.
